Thanks, y'all!

00:00:01 - Jenny GK
It's Tuesday.

00:00:03 - Caitlin Kindred
Yay.

00:00:05 - Jenny GK
Welcome back.

00:00:07 - Caitlin Kindred
We're so glad y'all are here. And that was a long part. I swear I'm. Okay. I am. We're recording this in the morning, and I have only had about a quarter of my coffee, so.

00:00:28 - Jenny GK
Oh, I'm already on my second cup.

00:00:30 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay. Yeah, see, I am just. I'm unmedicated today because it makes me thirsty and I don't like it, but also, I haven't had my coffee, so. Hi, everyone. We're so glad you're here today. We're telling you. What are we. What are you telling us about today? You do it.

00:00:47 - Jenny GK
Okay. So in episode 108, I learned that I was flossing wrong, basically because I didn't floss. But even when I did, I was doing it wrong, and I said to myself, um, what else on earth am I doing wrong that at 40 years old, I thought I was doing right.

00:01:04 - Caitlin Kindred
Is this in general? Because I can think of about a thousand things I'm doing wrong, generally.

00:01:10 - Jenny GK
Or I am.

00:01:13 - Caitlin Kindred
Well, I would never.

00:01:14 - Jenny GK
With grooming.

00:01:15 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, oh, grooming things. Okay, so we're talking about grooming things you're probably doing wrong. Oh, no. But. Oh, yes. Okay.

00:01:24 - Jenny GK
And I was most of these.

00:01:26 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, no. Okay, well, then I'm sure I'll be at least half. All right, let's.

00:01:31 - Jenny GK
No. Remember, like, you taught me about skincare. Like, ah, go from most watery to least watery.

00:01:37 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes.

00:01:38 - Jenny GK
I didn't know any of that.

00:01:39 - Caitlin Kindred
Have you.

00:01:40 - Jenny GK
But now I do.

00:01:41 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay, I was gonna say, have you changed your things? I've learned unholy skin ways. It doesn't matter. Let's. Let's get to the episode.

00:01:49 - Jenny GK
Okay. Before we do that, though, if Caitlin was part of the nail bed, she'd be the cute.

00:01:58 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, my lord.

00:02:05 - Jenny GK
Oh, somebody googled manicure themed pickup lines.

00:02:11 - Caitlin Kindred
Manicure themed pickup lines. Who is using those besides you?

00:02:16 - Jenny GK
There is a theme? Yeah. I mean, I just did. And I went to more than one website.

00:02:21 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, my. That's interesting.

00:02:23 - Jenny GK
They're getting some traffic today.

00:02:25 - Caitlin Kindred
All right, well, probably just, you know, the one of you, that's Jenny. She's my rule breaking hygiene. Rule breaking? I guess. The beautiful unicorn nurse.

00:02:41 - Jenny GK
Okay, so am I a unicorn who's also a nurse or a nurse that takes care of unicorn?

00:02:46 - Caitlin Kindred
It's hyphenated unicorn nurse. I'm thinking. I don't really know. I honestly don't know.

00:02:55 - Jenny GK
I'm gonna go with I'm a unicorn who is also a nurse.

00:02:58 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay, I like that one. I feel like that's more you.

00:03:01 - Jenny GK
Yeah.

00:03:02 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah. Okay. I wanna also really quickly take a moment to give a shout out to Gretchen, aka G Rex, over at the show that is has a swear word in it, so I can't say it because of who our audience is, but it's shirt that goes on in our heads. Yes. Shirt. But it's not a shirt. It's a take the r out. Anyway, there's a new feature that you can find if you look in our show notes and you can send us a text message if you want to, just to say hi or, I don't know, deliver fan mail however you'd like to go, but whatever you want to use it for. So I got a message on our podcast feed from Gretchen, aka G Rex from this show saying that she loves us and we've struck up a conversation, and this is the kindest, sweetest woman, but she is cracking me up. If you have not listened to this show, please go listen, because it is heartfelt, it is kind. It is all about letting you know that your feelings are completely valid and that sometimes life is really, really hard. You know, sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue sort of vibes. But also, there are moments of funny that happen in everything. And I just. I am loving this show, and Gretchen is just the nicest person. So I wanted to say thank you to Gretchen for from shirt that goes on in our heads.

00:04:33 - Jenny GK
That goes on in our heads.

00:04:37 - Caitlin Kindred
All right, you ready? Let's do this.

00:04:39 - Jenny GK
I am so ready.

00:04:41 - Caitlin Kindred
Great.

00:04:43 - Jenny GK
Okay, so again, you taught me that I was flossing wrong in episode 108.

00:04:48 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes.

00:04:49 - Jenny GK
And I went back and said, okay, if I'm flossing wrong, what other things in my beauty routine are wicked wrong?

00:04:59 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, goodness.

00:05:00 - Jenny GK
So here we go. The first one that you are not supposed to do is dip your fingers in your jars or your containers.

00:05:09 - Caitlin Kindred
Uh oh.

00:05:10 - Jenny GK
And I have done this literally every night that I've been wearing night cream. I just have the jar on my bedside table. I roll over as I'm about to fall asleep and remind myself, oh, you didn't put your cream on, open the jar and put those dirty little fingers right in there and smother it all over my face.

00:05:29 - Caitlin Kindred
Did you say smather?

00:05:31 - Jenny GK
Yes.

00:05:32 - Caitlin Kindred
Is smather a word?

00:05:34 - Jenny GK
I don't know.

00:05:36 - Caitlin Kindred
Every night I spray up my face with cold. I like smather. We're using it.

00:05:43 - Jenny GK
Okay, so here's the deal. Like, your hands are gross and just washed.

00:05:50 - Caitlin Kindred
No, they're not. Right.

00:05:52 - Jenny GK
They are. They touch everything. But even if your hands are clean, you still risk getting bacteria in the cream, so use a scoop or a Q tip. And if you use a reusable scoop, you gotta wash that.

00:06:08 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, that's so much work.

00:06:10 - Jenny GK
So just use a Q tip.

00:06:12 - Caitlin Kindred
Are you gonna keep Q tips next to your bed now for when you need to smother cream on your face?

00:06:17 - Jenny GK
Yes, but, you know, I'm still gonna use my hands to apply it. I'm just gonna use the Q tip to scoop it.

00:06:22 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:06:23 - Jenny GK
There will still be hand smathering.

00:06:26 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:06:31 - Jenny GK
Here we go. The next one. And I literally did this yesterday.

00:06:37 - Caitlin Kindred
Uh oh.

00:06:39 - Jenny GK
Yesterday. Yesterday, yesterday. Like, not like I have done this before, but I thought I was doing the right thing yesterday. Oh, finishing your makeup look with powder.

00:06:55 - Caitlin Kindred
You can't do that. Why?

00:06:57 - Jenny GK
You're not supposed to do that after your age. Starts with a three oh.

00:07:01 - Caitlin Kindred
Because it settles into fine lines.

00:07:03 - Jenny GK
Right? Oh, no, I know that you don't have any lines because of your forehead poison, but those of us who do should be using a primer before makeup instead of a setting powder. Now, also, don't underestimate the power of a good setting spray. Like, this is like hairspray for your makeup. Yes.

00:07:24 - Caitlin Kindred
I love setting spray. I have a good one. I'll add it to our page. I love this setting spray.

00:07:29 - Jenny GK
I found good housekeeping made a list of 1770 setting sprays that they like.

00:07:37 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, okay, perfect.

00:07:38 - Jenny GK
So I have that link for you, too.

00:07:40 - Caitlin Kindred
That's even more important over the summer when if you put on makeup at all, it just melts off your face in Texas.

00:07:47 - Jenny GK
Right.

00:07:48 - Caitlin Kindred
Or anywhere where it gets even remotely hot.

00:07:50 - Jenny GK
But, yeah. Okay, well, and yesterday, I was, like, wiping makeup off my face with a paper towel as I was sitting outside. Also, I think I should tell you that the sources for all of this information will be in our blog post. Yes, but some of it came from AARP.

00:08:09 - Caitlin Kindred
I can't. Oh, my gosh. This source is called the Ethel from Aarpe. Jen. Oh, my gosh.

00:08:20 - Jenny GK
I died.

00:08:21 - Caitlin Kindred
I died, right. The Ethel.

00:08:25 - Jenny GK
And, like, the. The logo is just, like a pair of cat eye gloves. It's so good.

00:08:31 - Caitlin Kindred
Not a caftan. Like. Yeah, yeah, Dorothy. Just, like, standing there. Oh, man. All right.

00:08:41 - Jenny GK
Okay, okay, so the next one comes from Beautyblenders blog. Okay, so this is that sponge that.

00:08:49 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes.

00:08:49 - Jenny GK
Like, everybody had to have five or ten years ago.

00:08:52 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah.

00:08:54 - Jenny GK
They tell you, do not swipe liquid makeup or powder makeup across your face with a brush or beauty blender.

00:09:02 - Caitlin Kindred
Really?

00:09:04 - Jenny GK
Really? Now, I already knew this one because of my dear friend Maggie from MDH beauty whose instagram handle is just MDH beauty. Maggie taught me that you have to stipple. Okay, pat, pat, pat, pat. When you swipe, it does not look as airbrushed and neat and tidy as when you stipple.

00:09:28 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay?

00:09:29 - Jenny GK
You get streaks or areas of non coverage, whereas the stippling lets it sit on top of your face instead of, like, being rubbed in and creates a cleaner look.

00:09:41 - Caitlin Kindred
I love how this came from beautyblender's blog.

00:09:47 - Jenny GK
Yes. Now here's the other thing. If you have forgotten since you acquired your first beauty blender many years ago.

00:09:57 - Caitlin Kindred
You have to wet it before you use it. You wet it a little, then you squeeze it out and then you can stick. It helps. Yep.

00:10:05 - Jenny GK
Yes.

00:10:06 - Caitlin Kindred
And also you have to watch.

00:10:07 - Jenny GK
I reminds you, saying, like, hey, oh, yeah, wash it. That was another one I came across. Like, hey, you're not washing your makeup brushes enough. But I feel like the world knows that now.

00:10:18 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah. And also it's depressing, but I interrupted you. Keep going. I'm sorry.

00:10:22 - Jenny GK
No, no. They were just, their blog post just reminded you as the consumer that there's a chemical structure to their sponge that actually works better when it's wet.

00:10:36 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:10:37 - Jenny GK
So, like, it's like the scrub mommy, scrub daddy. Like, when it's hot water, it does one thing, when it's cold water, it's another. The beauty blender is designed to work wet, so don't forget to do that. Okay. So when I originally told you that this was the research I was doing, I told you the name of the episode could be, you're brushing your hair wrong.

00:11:01 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes.

00:11:01 - Jenny GK
And then other grooming mistakes you're making. Do you know that you're not supposed to start at the top of your head?

00:11:09 - Caitlin Kindred
You mean, so all those times that my mom, like, accidentally or on purpose, brushed my eyebrows and forehead as she was working her way through my hair when I was younger is not correct. I could. I could have told you then. I don't know that I could have told you now.

00:11:27 - Jenny GK
You are supposed to start at the very bottom brush in small strokes and not pull all the way through from top to bottom. You can do that with your hand, but with the brush, it's too harsh. It causes breakage.

00:11:42 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, it's too harsh. That makes sense. I usually brush from the bottom anyway because it hurts too much to start at the top because I got it. Get some massive snarls.

00:11:51 - Jenny GK
You have texture to your hair.

00:11:53 - Caitlin Kindred
I do.

00:11:54 - Jenny GK
Those of us who have this bored straight hair, I really don't even have to brush it.

00:11:58 - Caitlin Kindred
You know what? Else I learned about this is that. What is that? When you're putting product in your hair, if you're not using a wide tooth comb to comb it through your hair, you're not using it properly because you're not distributing it through your hair. When I am in the shower conditioning my hair, I rub it all over and I run my hands, and then I comb it through. But then this is where I start my curl control in the shower. And so I. I also do the same with my, like, curl cream, which I didn't know.

00:12:40 - Jenny GK
You know what? That makes sense, though, because when you watch women of color do a wash day, like they're using a wide.

00:12:49 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah. Makes so much sense.

00:12:52 - Jenny GK
Well, I have one in my shower that I use for the detangling.

00:12:56 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes.

00:12:56 - Jenny GK
When I sometimes have that. But, um, I am going to start using it when I apply product.

00:13:02 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, there you go.

00:13:04 - Jenny GK
God knows, with my hair as thin and fine as it is, there's a lot of product in it every day. So new beauty is the company that taught me. I'm brushing my hair wrong.

00:13:14 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:13:15 - Jenny GK
Okay. So the next two come from an extension company's blog called sitting pretty, and they do halo extensions. And so this is about hair care for women who are recognizing that they need a little oomph in their hair because they're buying more hair extensions. Buy more hair. Yeah. So the first one is, do not blow dry wet hair.

00:13:42 - Caitlin Kindred
What is the point of the blow dryer?

00:13:44 - Jenny GK
Yes. Yes. I was like, wait, what? I'm sorry. And they said, especially if you are using a brush, do not blow dry your hair wet.

00:13:54 - Caitlin Kindred
No.

00:13:54 - Jenny GK
They say air or towel dry it to about 80% dry.

00:13:58 - Caitlin Kindred
No.

00:13:59 - Jenny GK
And then you use the brush and the blow dryer. And they said, especially if you're using a blow dryer brush, the amount of time under the brush and heat is causing a lot of damage. So if you're like me, I blow dry my hair every single day.

00:14:17 - Caitlin Kindred
Nope.

00:14:17 - Jenny GK
Or I guess, let's be fair, every time I wash it.

00:14:20 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, there we go. Okay.

00:14:24 - Jenny GK
And I wash my hair every time I shower. I know it's bad. That's another thing I'm doing wrong. But I do know that I'm making that mistake. And I know I could, like, train it, and it would just take a couple of weeks of greasy and it would be fine, but I just can't do it. I tried. Our mutual friend Lauren told me, oh, I've gone five days without washing my hair. And I was like, I've gone five minutes.

00:14:50 - Caitlin Kindred
Right. And so she like, she has really.

00:14:53 - Jenny GK
Challenged me to do it.

00:14:54 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, yeah.

00:14:55 - Jenny GK
But, no, it just doesn't work. Hang on. I hate you. I'm gonna murder you. I'm gonna. I'm gonna kill you right here on the show. Oh, my God. I looked out the window, and the dogs were outside, and I was like, how the did my dogs leave from sitting right next to me to going out the window? And it's because John has come back and he opened the door and let them out. How did you come in without me hearing you?

00:15:27 - Caitlin Kindred
You have bad earrings, or you have headphones in and you're talking to me on a show.

00:15:33 - Jenny GK
Oh, my God.

00:15:34 - Caitlin Kindred
Are you wearing huggy hoops right now, or. Let me see. I want to see your earrings.

00:15:38 - Jenny GK
Oh, they're bigger here.

00:15:42 - Caitlin Kindred
They're super cute, though. They are.

00:15:44 - Jenny GK
They little, like, they're, like, closing a.

00:15:46 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay. I thought they were, like a little cow print. Oh, but those are cute. Oh, I like those. Good job. Well done. Anyway, I really thought that, like, I.

00:15:57 - Jenny GK
Was gonna have to worry about a robber in my house.

00:16:00 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, my God.

00:16:01 - Jenny GK
Like, who let my dogs out?

00:16:04 - Caitlin Kindred
Who? Who? Okay, so I'm just going to put this out there as someone who has textured hair. If I let it air dry first, like, I. When I do. When I. When I straighten it, which you. I mean, you used to see me with straightened hair, like, on occasion. It's not a thing I normally do, but it. I have to start when it's pretty wet to the drying process. Otherwise, it doesn't. It just doesn't lay the way it's supposed. It doesn't look like a blowout. Right? Like, it doesn't look the way it's supposed to. So I don't. I don't.

00:16:42 - Jenny GK
I wonder if maybe the intent behind this is, like, if you're like me and you blow dry your hair every day as part of your style routine, don't do it when your hair is so wet because you're going to spend way too much time under the pressure of the brush and the heat. But if this is a. Every once in a while, think, sure. Start with wet hair because you're doing a special style.

00:17:04 - Caitlin Kindred
The other thing is too, like, in humid climates, it takes forever for your hair to get to 80% dry. Like, I could, when I lived in Colorado, I could wash my hair, and then by the time I got to the blow drying stage of getting ready, it would be about 30% to 50% dry, depending on how involved my process was.

00:17:34 - Jenny GK
But there's no evaporation happening in this state.

00:17:36 - Caitlin Kindred
No, I can put my wet dishes out of the dishwasher on the drying rack in the morning, and they'll still have puddles of water in them in the evening. It's ridiculous. So I think that that's a really high bar. 80%. Maybe just.

00:17:53 - Jenny GK
I mean, I'm not gonna do it.

00:17:54 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, maybe just make sure I'm making dripping. I don't know. And. And, yeah, bring it out with.

00:17:59 - Jenny GK
And I'm gonna, like, I'm gonna put off the blow drying.

00:18:02 - Caitlin Kindred
Uh huh.

00:18:05 - Jenny GK
Step out of the shower, and I blow dry my hair right away. Now I'm gonna, you know, kind of change a little bit.

00:18:11 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah. I always did it the last. I would do it last. Like, after my makeup and everything.

00:18:16 - Jenny GK
You're already better than me.

00:18:17 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, thanks.

00:18:19 - Jenny GK
The other one. Yeah, the other one that comes from sitting pretty extensions, is don't throw your hair up in a ponytail or a messy bun, thinking that you're protecting it.

00:18:35 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah.

00:18:35 - Jenny GK
Okay. So they say you should wear your hair down more, but they also say, like, do not tell yourself that by putting your hair up, you are protecting it. You are not. You are actually doing more damage because the time under pressure and the elastics can cause breakage. But this is the part I didn't ever think about. When you pull your hair in certain spots in the same direction over and over again, it can cause bald spots.

00:19:08 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah. Because you're breaking it in the same spot over. Yeah. That makes. You're putting tension on those.

00:19:14 - Jenny GK
Yes. They're saying, like, you can actually pull the follicles out and you will not get any regrowth.

00:19:22 - Caitlin Kindred
All right, well, I guess it's more claw clips for me. I got my little flower.

00:19:27 - Jenny GK
Well, and that's what they said. Yeah. They said claw clips are great wraps or bandanas. Right. Like, all of that soft fabric is fine, but if you're going to put it in a elastic every day, thinking that you're doing yourself a favor, you're actually not.

00:19:44 - Caitlin Kindred
I wonder what they would define as elastic, though. Cause I like the hair ties that I use, like, the ponytail holders. I don't know what we're calling them these days, but those are. Mine are, like, like, stretchy. It's almost like nylon fabric. Like, I don't really use. So I don't know. I wonder what they would define as elastic if we're talking about, like, those clear.

00:20:04 - Jenny GK
Probably what I use, because what I use to put my hair up is basically the rubber bands that kids put on their braces, those.

00:20:12 - Caitlin Kindred
Those clear plastic things.

00:20:14 - Jenny GK
Uh, huh? Mm hmm.

00:20:15 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, yeah. I could see how that would. That does. Those do break hair. That's why people cut them out a lot of the time, because it. Cause. Yeah, because it can pull, so. All right, well, okay.

00:20:25 - Jenny GK
And I have one more for us.

00:20:27 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:20:29 - Jenny GK
And this one I also do. And I'm gonna have to retrain my muscles.

00:20:35 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, yeah. That's hard.

00:20:37 - Jenny GK
I have been filing my nails wrong.

00:20:39 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, do you go back and forth?

00:20:42 - Jenny GK
Yes. Oh, yeah.

00:20:43 - Caitlin Kindred
You're not supposed to do that.

00:20:45 - Jenny GK
So I have always gone back and forth, and I have always had nails that split. These things are related. You are not supposed to saw your nails because it causes the tips to fray and split, which I just thought I needed more bio tin. No, I need to stop filing my nails like I'm sawing them.

00:21:15 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah. So how do you do it?

00:21:16 - Jenny GK
One direction? Yeah, one direction from the edge to the center. Then you flip, and you go from the other edge to the center in one direction until you get the shape that you want.

00:21:28 - Caitlin Kindred
All right. I mean, that makes a lot of sense. I. When I started becoming a nail girly, I kind of looked at how to. I was doing my own for a long time, and there's even, like, episodes where I recommended. Right. Where product, which I'm happy to share. I. Whatever. But that was when I learned that I was doing it wrong. And I remember, like, sitting there watching my mom, and my mom has, like, good, natural nails. I remember watching her do it, and I'm like, oh, she's been doing it right this whole time. And she had, like, her glass vial, and she's.

00:22:02 - Jenny GK
Oh, they also say glass is good. Yeah, it causes less damage.

00:22:07 - Caitlin Kindred
Makes sense. But she just always had such good deals. And I'm thinking about it, and I'm like, oh, yeah, that's the. That is the way she did it. She always went from the edge to the center and on each side. All right.

00:22:17 - Jenny GK
Yeah. No, I have been basically belt sanding my nails. All right, so here are the things that you shouldn't do. Don't dip your fingers in the jar. Instead, use a scoop. Don't finish your makeup. Look with powder if your age starts with a three or greater. Instead, use a setting spray after and a primer before. Do not swipe makeup across your face. Stipple it. Dot, dot, dot, dot, dot. Don't brush your hair from the scalp, as weird as it sounds. Start from the bottom and go up small sections at a time. Don't blow dry your hair when it's wet. Wait, I'm supposed to dry my dry hair. Yes, you are. And do not kid yourself saying that my messy bun is protecting my hair. It's actually breaking it and maybe causing you to go bald. And, of course, finally, don't do the belt sander to your nails. Let's take a break and listen to ourselves.

00:23:23 - Caitlin Kindred
It is 100% us, like, promoting ourselves.

00:23:28 - Jenny GK
Yeah. No, it's amazing. I love it.

00:23:31 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh. What wasn't that undo. I know what mine is. I'm good.

00:23:49 - Jenny GK
Okay, great. All right. Are we back? We're back.

00:23:54 - Caitlin Kindred
We're back.

00:23:55 - Jenny GK
Now it's time for us to sit in a circle, crisscross applesauce on the carpet, and tell some stories. And I'm gonna go first.

00:24:03 - Caitlin Kindred
Do it.

00:24:04 - Jenny GK
And I'm gonna tell you that I am currently obsessed with Justin Timberlake. Caitlin, I went to go see him last week, and it was incredible. Okay. People are saying, oh, he's the greatest entertainer of our generation. You have to go see Justin Timberlake. He puts on a hell of a show. Yeah, he does. All the hype is real.

00:24:27 - Caitlin Kindred
Really?

00:24:29 - Jenny GK
All right. It was incredible. Now, here's the deal. I went with my mom. It was our mother's day present from John to me and then to my mom.

00:24:41 - Caitlin Kindred
That's so sweet.

00:24:42 - Jenny GK
Together. And we went to. Yeah, it was really fun. And we went to the show in San Antonio, even though we live in the Austin area, because the tickets were significantly cheaper at the frostbank center, at the. At and t stadium or whatever the, you know, long name is at this point.

00:25:03 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah.

00:25:04 - Jenny GK
Over the moody center. Just because this moody center is a brand new venue. It's super nice, but everything there costs more. So we went to San Antonio so we could get better seats. And let me tell you, totally worth the drive. The doors open at 630. The show is slated to start at 730. At 730, we are sitting in our seats and no one else is.

00:25:27 - Caitlin Kindred
Huh?

00:25:28 - Jenny GK
And the show does not look like it's even close to starting.

00:25:31 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:25:32 - Jenny GK
At about 08:00 someone walks out to a second stage that's kind of in the bottom of the horseshoe of the arena.

00:25:42 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay.

00:25:44 - Jenny GK
And people are cheering and chanting. Also, there seems to be a bar around this stage. So there's people out in front of it, like. And there's bartenders. And then the stage is in the center, and he says, hey, san Antonio, my name's such and such, and I'll be your dj for the next hour. And so my mom and I, who were really excited about a concert that's supposed to start at 730, are realizing that Justin Timberlake's not going on until nine. And meanwhile, his opener is a dj.

00:26:23 - Caitlin Kindred
Mm mm.

00:26:25 - Jenny GK
Okay, now, the second song he played and had me cackling.

00:26:31 - Caitlin Kindred
Mm hmm.

00:26:32 - Jenny GK
Soldier boy. Yes.

00:26:36 - Caitlin Kindred
Did he, did he do it with a little lead up from, like, twinkle, twinkle, little star or anything like that Taylor guy?

00:26:42 - Jenny GK
How. I wonder what yoo. No, but I did. I did laugh. And then I looked at my mom and I said, okay, so you want to go get a snack? She was like, yes. So it was hilarious. There was this mass exodus of the people who were in their seats, because, remember, a lot of people didn't sit down, but of the people who were in their seats, there were all these middle aged women just walking out of their room.

00:27:12 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, JT, what a bummer.

00:27:15 - Jenny GK
And we were laughing so hard. I mean, there are plenty of people who are discovering him now and are young, but the majority of this crowd are the people his age. In syncfix are people his age. And it was too funny just watching in the concourse, all of these women in their forties, fifties, and sixties.

00:27:39 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, my gosh, that's hysterical.

00:27:41 - Jenny GK
Okay, so DJ is over. We go back to our seats, and the magic happens. This man put on a fabulous show. He is dancing and singing. His band is a huge part of the production, and they come forward on the stage. The dancers are dancing with the people in the band.

00:28:01 - Caitlin Kindred
That's cool.

00:28:01 - Jenny GK
It was incredible. Now, the second stage at the bottom of the horseshoe is also for Justin Timberlight.

00:28:07 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, I would. Yeah.

00:28:10 - Jenny GK
He got off the main stage and walked through the crowd to get to.

00:28:17 - Caitlin Kindred
The other one full of handsy 40 year olds.

00:28:22 - Jenny GK
Yes.

00:28:23 - Caitlin Kindred
No.

00:28:24 - Jenny GK
And then he walks back and sings again from the main stage.

00:28:28 - Caitlin Kindred
Wow. That's pretty cool. Good for him.

00:28:32 - Jenny GK
And I don't want to give away any part of the show in case people are gonna go see it, because a lot of it was really, really cool production value. But I will say that there were so many numbers that I thought were the finale.

00:28:49 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, wow.

00:28:49 - Jenny GK
And they weren't because every single thing had high energy.

00:28:53 - Caitlin Kindred
Wow. That's awesome.

00:28:55 - Jenny GK
It was. It was so great. Very worth it. Go see him.

00:29:02 - Caitlin Kindred
I feel like there's. My heart is hurting because I feel like there's been some very problematic behavior of his that we're learning about. Part of it was when he was much younger. Right. And writing. Men do stupid things, but also, you know, I'm big on taking accountability, and I have yet to hear some of that, and it's disappointing. On the other hand, the songs are bangers, so I just have to like enjoy.

00:29:30 - Jenny GK
I mean, that's.

00:29:31 - Caitlin Kindred
I have to enjoy the songs, right? I'm having to.

00:29:34 - Jenny GK
Can we separate from the artist?

00:29:36 - Caitlin Kindred
It's not always easy to do that. It's really not. Especially with problematic behavior.

00:29:41 - Jenny GK
I still crank Billie Jean every time it comes on the radio.

00:29:44 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh, 100%. That's my jam. Oh. Anyway, I. I don't know. Well, don't stop to get enough anyway. Okay. I.

00:29:57 - Jenny GK
Yes.

00:29:57 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes. Okay.

00:29:58 - Jenny GK
Also own that piece. Yes.

00:30:00 - Caitlin Kindred
So.

00:30:01 - Jenny GK
Okay, your turn.

00:30:02 - Caitlin Kindred
Well, here's the thing. My, my obsession and my gym of the week have to go together. So I'm going to tell you to do your gem also because then.

00:30:10 - Jenny GK
Oh, okay.

00:30:11 - Caitlin Kindred
I'm going to tell you do it. Okay.

00:30:13 - Jenny GK
So I haven't talked about my dad in a while on the show, so I feel like it's his turn to come back up. And as you might know if you are frequent listener of the show, my dad is in his mid sixties. Big fan of reading Iata on Reddit, constantly telling stories of bridezillas he's read about.

00:30:41 - Caitlin Kindred
He's extra.

00:30:43 - Jenny GK
He is extra. He is currently writing a book about the pretend band that he and his friends made in college because it is the 50th anniversary of the Barfettes. So he's writing in an anthology that he will have the Barfettes who recorded on Upchuck Records.

00:31:03 - Caitlin Kindred
Stop.

00:31:03 - Jenny GK
And he. No. And so. But he's writing a book about them and he's going to self publish it and then send it out to his friends. But that is not our gem. The gem is when my whole family is together for my nephew's birthday and my dad is telling a story to me and my brother and he's describing the main character in the story as a, quote, military brat. And then he goes on to explain that means that their parent was in.

00:31:44 - Caitlin Kindred
The military to three children.

00:31:47 - Jenny GK
Why is this the gem of the week?

00:31:49 - Caitlin Kindred
Right?

00:31:49 - Jenny GK
Because my dad was active duty for 26 years.

00:31:55 - Caitlin Kindred
Right?

00:31:55 - Jenny GK
You guys literally my entire youth. Yeah, he was in the military, right?

00:32:01 - Caitlin Kindred
He's. You guys were. You literally lived all the time.

00:32:04 - Jenny GK
He retired after I graduated from college.

00:32:06 - Caitlin Kindred
Right, exactly. What in the world.

00:32:10 - Jenny GK
It's like, really, dad, military brat means your parent was in the military.

00:32:16 - Caitlin Kindred
I have never heard that before.

00:32:18 - Jenny GK
I have never heard that term. Thanks for clearing that up.

00:32:25 - Caitlin Kindred
What did he say when you're like, uh. What?

00:32:28 - Jenny GK
I mean, he chuckled a little bit and realized like, okay, that was a little mansplainey. Like, I don't need to tell you what you are.

00:32:38 - Caitlin Kindred
Oh lord. All right.

00:32:41 - Jenny GK
My brother and I just kind of look at each other. Like, did that really just happen?

00:32:44 - Caitlin Kindred
It did.

00:32:45 - Jenny GK
He really just described to us what the. Yeah. Mm hmm. Okay.

00:32:51 - Caitlin Kindred
Okay. Well.

00:32:55 - Jenny GK
I should also add that as soon as that happened, I whipped out my phone and wrote it down so I could say it.

00:33:00 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah.

00:33:00 - Jenny GK
And my dad knew exactly what I was doing.

00:33:04 - Caitlin Kindred
I love it. That's funny when they know their fodder.

00:33:07 - Jenny GK
All right.

00:33:08 - Caitlin Kindred
Your fodder.

00:33:08 - Jenny GK
Yeah.

00:33:09 - Caitlin Kindred
Just FYI.

00:33:10 - Jenny GK
Give me your two.

00:33:13 - Caitlin Kindred
My two. So yesterday I was scrolling as one does on Instagram, and I came across.

00:33:23 - Jenny GK
This reel, or as my five year old calls it, squirreling.

00:33:26 - Caitlin Kindred
Yeah, I like that term. I came across this reel that I had to send to my dear friend Brenna. And one thing you have to know about Brenna is that she is the kindest person. Like, she's got an edge to her, which I. I have to have a friend who has an edge. It's just how it has to be. But she's also so kind. Another thing.

00:33:48 - Jenny GK
What is it that Weezer says? If you can't say anything nice, come sit by us.

00:33:54 - Caitlin Kindred
Right? Come sit next to me and we'll have a conversation. This is why I used to get in trouble at staff meetings, because that was what I was doing. I have.

00:34:02 - Jenny GK
I have told my students, like, I have to choose where I sit in a faculty meeting. You choose where you sit in class.

00:34:08 - Caitlin Kindred
Right.

00:34:09 - Jenny GK
Like, make a good choice.

00:34:10 - Caitlin Kindred
Make a good choice. Um, the other thing you have to know about Brenna is that this girl loves a good falling down video. Like, loves. Like, she's the kind of friend who.

00:34:22 - Jenny GK
2024. Where that is actually a genre of film.

00:34:25 - Caitlin Kindred
It is. It is. Like, there was the video of the woman who went to Home Depot, bought, like, a big Tupperware thing to put over her head so that she wouldn't mess up her newly blown out hair, and then immediately slowly slips and falls and crashes to the floor. It is hilarious and awful.

00:34:40 - Jenny GK
Are you thinking of the cop in the slide?

00:34:44 - Caitlin Kindred
Yes. She loves stuff like that. And she will be if you fall down. She is the one who will laugh first, and then she'll go get you an ice pack because she's got to laugh first. So I found this video, and I'm going to put it on the blog post for this episode because it is so funny. It is a man being recorded by his wife. He swears he can jump over this fence. He swears. He's like, I can do it. My wife doesn't think I can do it, but I can do it. She's like, oh, no, I believe you. I'm gonna. I want the whole world to believe you too. So I'm gonna record this. And, you know, she's thinking, this man cannot do this. He starts the run, and the first thing it. First of all, it's a slow motion run, which is indication number one, this is not gonna go well. Two, right. He goes, oh, my knees.

00:35:42 - Jenny GK
He's hearing the popping in the cat.

00:35:43 - Caitlin Kindred
Right, right. That should have been. That's your check engine light right there. Right. Let's think. You can't. And then he jumps this fence. It's probably two and a half feet high. Both of his feet catch and he hits on the other side. And you hear the wife cackle like, she goes, yep, that went exactly how I thought it was going to go. I have had a rough week. And I found that video immediately, of course, sent it to Brenna, who needed to see it. And then my other girlfriends are like, okay, but wait, you have to look at the comments. So my obsession is this video. I told you yesterday, I watched that video like nine times in a row. And it got funnier every time. And then 5 hours later, I showed it to my husband and I was still cackling. And right now I'm laughing and I have tears because it's so funny to me.

00:36:38 - Jenny GK
So good.

00:36:39 - Caitlin Kindred
I have to read you some of these comments because they are so funny. Okay, one of them was, he's running in lowercase. Sorry, what? Okay, another one. Knees and four red circles. Slides. He's wearing slide sandals. Four red circles. Jumping ability. Three red circles and one green. One. Confidence. Four green circles. Another one. This was me too. I had this same feeling. I was like, girl, he can jump it. He started running in slow motion. All my faith went out the window.

00:37:31 - Jenny GK
I feel like it needs that. Chariots of fire.

00:37:40 - Caitlin Kindred
Also, it felt like spoke to me because of how many times I watched it. Why is this video 2 hours long? Lol bruh. I watched this an unhealthy amount of time. It's like 25 seconds. Person is saying it's 2 hours long. Okay, then this is my favorite one. For whatever reason, the last line. Every time I hear this, it just kills me. Okay, clues that Unc won't make it. As in uncle, right? Like, clues that Unc won't make it. One. Wearing slides. Two. Jogging like a varsity that don't care too much on warm ups. Three. This is the one. Le wife recording. Like, I know how you're supposed to say it in French, right? I get it, but nobody says that, so it's le white, I am telling you, I have gone back to that video, like, seven more times just to read the extra comments that are coming. And it is so good, you guys. I'm going to put it on the blog post. I swear. If you haven't seen it, you need to watch it. And when you do, you'll see it like, six times. It is so funny.

00:39:06 - Jenny GK
I rewatched it immediately. I was like, I have to say this again.

00:39:10 - Caitlin Kindred
His immediate running in lower. Oh, there was another one that was like, bro wearing cement slides. Why? I watched it so many times. And I will go back again today. I saved this for when I need to pick me up. You just know, like, you have so much faith. He's so confident. You see the fence. You're like, oh, yeah, dude, I could jump that. Like, no big deal. And then the way he just slow mo runs and goes, oh, my knees. And, you know, it's not gonna happen.

00:39:46 - Jenny GK
But I just love the idea of, like, the wife is recording it, like, yup, that's probably a problem.

00:39:57 - Caitlin Kindred
I was in hysterics. I laughed. Oh, my. I'm telling you, I. I really did watch it, like, nine times before. Before I could calm down. It was so good. I'm still laughing at it. That's why it's my obsession and my gem, because I just sat. It has to be both. Oh, gosh. Okay, well, all right.

00:40:20 - Jenny GK
When, um, it comes to this time in the show, I say things like, give us a review. Tell your friends. So now I'm gonna say, be like, g Rex and give us a review.

00:40:36 - Caitlin Kindred
And tell your friend, yeah, she's amazing.

00:40:39 - Jenny GK
So thanks for that.

00:40:43 - Caitlin Kindred
I'm like, my nose is running from left.

00:40:51 - Jenny GK
When you're filing, your nails, go only in one direction. That's the good choice.

00:40:56 - Caitlin Kindred
And the other good choice is if you're running and you take off in slow motion, and the first thing that comes out of your mouth is, oh, my knees. Remember, that's your check engine light. You should probably.

00:41:08 - Jenny GK
You don't do the job.

00:41:09 - Caitlin Kindred
You don't see.

00:41:13 - Jenny GK
Okay, bye.
